FREE THE IDEA is a creative self-improvement book that’s the mutant offspring of Stephen R. Covey’s The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People and Rick Rubin’s The Creative Act: A Way of Being. Basically, a more fun-to-read and easier-to-accomplish take on Julia Cameron’s The Artist’s Way.
Bookstore shelves are stocked with creative self-improvement tomes authored by legends-in-their-own-time (Questlove, Quincy Jones, Jeff Tweedy, Rick Rubin, etc.). But all of these books have a shortcoming at their core: How can the reader, a mere mortal, ever hope to achieve legend-level creativity?
There needs to be should be a creative self-improvement book that “normals” can relate to and put to actual use. A believable book that can help readers better access their own creative powers. A motivating book that is actually fun to read.
Readers will follow along as someone just like them goes through the (inspiring, terrifying, illuminating) process of creating something — in this case a book. By empathizing with the author, they’ll come to realize they can take the same steps to create anything they’ve ever wanted — whether it’s a poem, painting, business venture, game, song, and on into infinity.
